Vienna
An early morning tour of Vienna with a guide was an eye opener. Grand buildings lined the street, huge churches and monuments. A city if 1.8 million people with great public transportation and walking streets
We asked our guide about a monument that she just walked by. The answer was "oh that's for WWII and the holocaust". Nothing more was said.
We visited the jewish museum which began with life after the war. Of the 160,000, 65,000 were deported and murdered. Today only 8,000 remain. Many Eastern European Jews moved here after the war. The exhibit educated visitors on jewish customs, foods and religious holidays.
From there we crossed the Danube to visit the jewish quarter. Few religious men, mezuzahs, plaques on the ground of names of persons murdered, spotted the area. We stopped a man walking and he told us life was "fine" for him as a Jew in Vienna, but he does have an apartment in israel and a daughter there. The rest of the day was discovering the city in the cold rain!
Tonight off to a classical music concert at a palace! Beautiful!
